Basra / Iraq

A power company in Istanbul Turkey is specialized in supplying ship based power plants at Basra and Iraq.

Currently the company has stationed 2 ships (each of 120 Mwe / 132 KV ) generation capacity at Basra – Iraq , 2 ships ( each of 140 Mwe capacity ) at Pakistan and many more at Lebanon .

Each ship is equipped with Multiple generating sets either Wartsila or Sulzer or MAN each generating 10 to 19 MWe .

These generated power is exported from top deck mounted 132 KV multiple transformer substation and feed to the connected city.

Group power is associated with this company since 2009 for the entire generator control and synchronization as well as IEC 103 communication solution for grid SS interfaces.

GPCE Scope was to design, supply, erect and commission:

Generator control system.

SCADA system.

Synchronizing and load management system

Major challenges were pointed below:

Supply, erection and commissioning to be carried out on board at Iraq.

AVR (ABB Unitrol 1000) interface was much simpler and interface between new and old was done without any hindrance.

Different generators and different governing systems were to be harmonized for smooth load sharing and load dispatch.

Very old generators and very sluggish to response and hence required different tuning and system for each generators.

The system was designed and supplied with Schneider Quantum Processor based PLC and Unitrol 3 AVR’s.

Multi level synchronizing at generator breakers, Bus couplers were achieved by PLC system again with DIEF sync equipments.

System was commissioned and operational.
